Biography
Eva Spakman, born in 1957, is a Dutch artist living in Groningen, the Netherlands. She received her training at the Minerva Academy of Art in Groningen, where she concentrated on painting and graphic art (lithography and screen printing). She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in 1992.In her final extended essay she explored polarity within visual art.
Since her graduation there have been many exhibitions of her paintings, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere. Eva lived in Ireland for many years and has travelled widely, and this is reflected in her paintings and drawings, with their wide-ranging focus. Her work encompasses both abstract expressionism and figurative pieces, including landscapes–often monumental flora and fauna pieces – as well as portraits and nudes.Together with a group of other Groningen artists Spakman takes part in weekly model painting sessions.
Artists who have influenced her paintings are, among others: Marlène Dumas, Kees van Dongen, Gauguin, Matisse and Howard Hodgkin. For her graphic art she has drawn inspiration from such artists as Anton Heyboer, Soulages, Paul Klee.
On occasion Eva also takes on commissioned work: she has produced cover paintings for a number of books and CDs, including work by Toon Tellegen and a poetry collection by the Flemish poet Miriam Van hee. She has also created artwork for websites and produced business card designs and logos.
